What is the high-voltage bus?

The high-voltage bus or DC bus is a core concept in electric cars: It is one big parallel connection where the suppliers and consumers of power are connected. It is also present in many other applications, such as wind-turbines or eBikes.

Knowing about EV technology will help you understand how modern electric cars are built, how they are not built, and can aid you make better purchase decisions, or understand quotes from suppliers better. If you don't understand the high-voltage bus, you will not be able to build power electronics systems of any kind.

Devices on the High Voltage bus

  • High Voltage Battery
  • 3-Phase Motor & Inverter
  • DC/DC Converter
  • AC-Charger
  • DC-Charger
  • Current Shunt
  • High-Voltage fuse

Key Concepts

  • Pre-charging (otherwise you blow up your inverter!)
  • Shielding (otherwise you will disturb components around your system)
  • Separation of control systems from power delivery
