What is precharging?

£1 Billion is typically spent on developing a new Electric Car. The manufacturers put a whole lot of magic into EV powertrain development.

Understanding key engineering concepts will pay off in the long run, so I made this video to break down this key task in every EV powertrain: Precharging!

What is it? The precharge circuit protects high-voltage components by gradually charging capacitors before full system power-up. It limits inrush currents, preventing damage and enhancing the longevity of electronic systems.

This is part of the Power Electronics knowledge base, there are also separate sections for EV batteries and low-voltage vehicle control.

I've been building electric cars since 2018, and in this post, I’ll provide a high-level overview of the precharge circuit and how it saves your capacitors from destroying themselves!
